I know that I might be a little late on my Drake album review, but I wanted to listen to each song more than just once before I wrote any type of review on the album. Let me start of by saying that this album is the only Hip Hop album that I, being a 90's and early 2000's R&B lover, have been able to listen to from beginning to end without skipping around. Some on my favorite songs on the album are "Furthest Thing", "Own It", "Worst Behavior", "305 To My City" and "Come Thru". The only song that I didn't particularly like at first was "From Time". This was because, I thought that this song was way too slow and monotonous and didn't really complement the rest of the songs on his album. But with time, I grew to appreciate the beauty of Jhene Aiko's voice and like the song. Overall, this album to me is the best Hip Hop album of the year; even amongst all of the great music Hip Hop has put out this year such as Jay- Z and J. Cole's album and you cannot forget Kendrick Lamar's "Control" verse. A lot of people try to play drake and say that he is too emotional and needs to stick to just rapping and I kind of get where they are coming from considering the reason why I wasn't too keen about his "From Time "track. However, what people need to realize is how revolutionary Drake’s music is.
Take me for instance, a girl who's has never been much of a Hip Hop fan because most of it is popcorn and has no real substance. My music of choice has always been 90's and some early 2000's R&B music. I'll listen to Boys II Men, Donell Jones, Jon B, Monica, Alicia Keys, Usher and Mario on repeat and never get tired of it. Drake's album wasn't only able to grab my attention, but was also able to keep it though- out the entire album solely because it was good music. This is important because although I like J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar and Jay- Z and think they are great rappers, I was not able to completely listen to their albums all the way through like I did drake's and in return, did not purchase them. Honestly one can say whatever they want about drake's character and how they don't like him as a person, but no one can deny the fact that his audience is broad and his level of his success extends past the borders of America. Unlike any other rapper, Drake is able to grab the attention on many people who wouldn’t normally listen to Hip Hop music and that alone is ground-breaking.
